I don't think ANYone wants to be wrong, K. You may just think that it should be really obvious to liberals how wrong they are. "How can they say those weird things!" I wonder the same thing about some of the RW extremists as well as the left. These people are intelligent, educated, extremely ideological beings who have lost an ability to see outside their own POV. They are far too entrenched in their own extremism to even start to compromise or see greys. They don't just not want to be wrong; they can't even consider the possibility that they are. And THAT to me is a very scary thing.
