US attorneys serve at the President's pleasure, dlot. He or his appointed cabinet officer can fire then at any time for any reason- -including political ones. If Congress wishes to change that, it may do so- -by making them Civil Servants, say. The Prexy cannot fire a Civil Servant; that's the very reason the Civil Service was legislated into existence.

HOWEVER, if Congress passes such a law now, it does not affect Gonzales. Congress is barred from passing ex post facto laws (look it up- -I'm sure you'll have to). ALSO it would bar any future Dem Prexy from firing a US attorney for political reasons- -bad thing, that.
