Hi Michael. I have to disagree on the odds of a "successful" outcome to the invasion and occupation of Iraq.

I think the odds were zero that either the Iraqi people or the US would have come out better after the invasion no matter how we had handled it.

You just can't destroy even a minimally functional government in a nation where the default power lies in the hands of disparate faiths, sects and tribes, where the institutions of benevolent government do not exist and where the people are radical, brutal and, with good cause, vengeful, and then expect that things will somehow work out if the foreign invader handles it "right."

The writing was in the sand, for centuries written in blood clear enough for anyone to read. Unfortunately, we were blinded by our dogmatic view that "all men are created equal" which we too often take to mean that all men are like us. The truth is that all men are like us when it comes to violently rejecting rule by strangers with guns but all men aren't like us when it comes to culture, moralistic views and the rule of law. Ed
