I think the suicide rate is higher than the national average, but I don't have any figures offhand. March is the worst month (to me) coming on the heels of a long winter and not yet much sunshine and warmth.

The extra darkness explains why so many coffee companies originated here -- Starbucks, Seattles Best Coffee, Tully's, and a slew of others -- and why we drink more coffee than the rest of the country. Strangely, we also buy more sunglasses than the rest of the US (cuz we step on them in the long dark winter <g>).

The darkness *has* recently been linked to increase rates of Muscular Dystrophy, which runs at twice the national average, similar to Norway and the rest of Scandihoovia. That MS link appears to be Vitamin D deficiency, obtained naturally via exposure to sunshine.

I lived for a few years on the coast where it rained more than twice what Seattle receives, so I was more prepared than most for this climate.
