MEMPHIS, TN - A federal court in Memphis today sentenced former state Senator John Ford to 5 1/2 years in prison.

The 65-year-old Ford was once one of the Legislature's most powerful figures. He is one of five former lawmakers convicted of bribery or extortion in a statewide corruption investigation code named "Tennessee Waltz."

Ford declined comment at he left the courthouse today, surrounded by family members, and got into a black sport utility vehicle.

Ford must also serve two years of supervised release when he is released after his prison term.

Ford's attorney, Michael Scholl, said they planned to appeal both his conviction and sentence, but declined to describe the grounds.

U.S. Attorney David Kustoff called the sentence "fair and reasonable."

Ford is one of two defendants convicted at trial. The other three pleaded guilty.

The U.S. Bureau of Prisons will decide where and when Ford must report.
