Gonzales was possessed of a "wonderful mildness." Senators of both parties might rage at his transparent evasions, but "not a wrinkle of agitation rippled him." He was passive in the face of partisan and even bipartisan aggression.

That was one of the most remarkable things about this fellow. Watching his "wonderful mildness" filled me with wonder about how in the world he could keep it up. The only answer I came up with is that he not only didn't think he did anything wrong, but that he didn't think that his interrogators actually thought he did anything wrong. It was all a show. Just like all actions in politics--just a mummery without any moral content whatever. An attitude shared by his boss.

Just amazing.
