I'm not saying it's crazy -- Intel seems to be doing it.
But I think you underestimate the complexity.
Remember that processor state is extremely subtle,
given that you're also doing out-of-order and superscalar
and speculative execution after branch prediction.
This sort of mechanism interacts with all of those.
And I doubt that you can set things up to easily snapshot
the whole processor state without a huge impact on
critical paths.

I think it impacts processor design pretty deeply.
That said, if you can make it all work, it's probably
the next big thing to do. After all, all the simple
ways to speed things up have already been implemented.
