M,
Yeah Beijing was not so nice (my least favourite Chinese city by a wide margin) but made worse by the humidity of the season.. My daughter is particularly sensitive and didn't complain.. In 2000 I saw lots of folks with those N95s or look a likes.. I saw only a very few this trip except interestingly enough folks handling food (a good thing)...

All this is subjective though, even the article IMO.. I'd like to see some stats on air quality etc. like we have up here and I imagine in the US also..

When I stop my car at an off ramp in Toronto I see nothing but crap at most, (most is a generous term), dumped ashtrays, cans , other litter and uncut weeds gone wild... Totally different from my experience in China. Ya see living in Toronto gives me a negative bias on the city.. Seems to be part of the human condition. :o)

I'm taking the glass half full approach here.. I do not think China is the black anchor of ever worsening pollution it is made out to be, that's all. I saw lot's of improvements. Only time will tell... I'll check back in over there in a few years... Looks to me like there is a real China Syndrome going on in the media right now..

Edit: I realise my eyes are only slightly better than second hand... but I still trust them more :O)
