You have to visit the thread twice to ban and unban. There are no timed bans.

All the moderator sees is a button to ban or unban.

You go to one of the posts of the users, and there is a ban button in the lower middle. You click on it and the user is banned. If you go to the ban list for the thread, you find the user and an unban button next to their ID.
