Even if it is for the common good (and that could be debated), it still represents a reduction in the standard of living. So? No one said that our standard of living had to go up year after year esp. if its predicated on the destruction of the planet. "Destruction of the planet" isn't at hand. If you mean some specific lesser harm you should say what it is. You're right.....its not the destruction of the planet but the potential extinction of the human race........definitely a lesser harm but one still dear to the hearts of most humans.
