There is a great argument for not letting this happen again, but those steps won't fix the current problem, and pouring more money into bad economic decisions is pointless if your goal is to stop both future profiteering and the wrong people buying the wrong houses. How do bailouts change anything on your agenda of what's wrong? If the Treasury eats the losses that the MBS investors should be taking and lets the bad buyers stay put, you have just codified and paid for what you are trying to discourage.
