I sure want to know where my own retirement money is! Ten years ago I rolled a large chunk of it into an IRA so I can control it directly. This gives me complete freedom to own XLE, GLD, FXY, SRS etc, if/when I want to.

I still have one tax deferred account managed by my former employer. It has a very limited choice of funds to invest in, and the documentation on these funds is quite sparse. One of the fixed income funds is loaded with "synthetic investment contracts (SICs)", aka "wraps". Twenty percent of these are with State Street Bank & Trust Co. Beats me what the heck this stuff is, but it sounds like a fancy way of "juicing up" returns. I've been rapidly cutting my exposure to this fund.

There will always be winners and losers in the retirement demographic. The losers will work for the winners.
