This is where you and I differ. Our differences aren't that great. Palestinians do get polled by outfits regarded as good (Khalil Shikaki runs the most respected, I can't think of the name off the top of my head) Their responses are somewhat contradictory. Most do wish for peace but they want all the terms that have been defined in the Pal public space as essential, including every bit of WB & Gaza and right of return to Israel, which would effectively turn Israel into an Arab state. Over 70% of the Palestinians also support suicide bombing of Israeli civilians. But the main difference between us is that I say that if a people are ruled by dictators, then the people's wish for peace won't matter. They will go to war as ordered. All they can do is stop supporting the dictator and the Pals, culturally, seem unable to take even this last step. They kept supporting Arafat even after it became clear that his leadership was a disaster. I heard one Palestinian notable say bitterly, "We're like the Bedouin, we support our sheikhs." I am sure there are many people in Gaza who wish that Hamas would end the economic blockade by recognizing Israel and ending the shelling of Sderot. Then Gaza's economy could pick up in a hurry, since its dire state is entirely man-made. I wouldn't be a bit suprized if the majority of people wished this even in radicalized Gaza. All I say is that it doesn't matter, their opinions don't count and we won't hear boo from them.
