The search drill made a big enough shaft to drop a camera and listening devices. To drill the big hole would have taken 3 times as long. They tried video and audio first.

They did have a larger drill on hand to pump down air, food and water if they found life. They did have the big rescue drill there that could have made a shaft to haul them up but it's slow and reserved for if they find life. These poor guys were probably crushed.
