If Hamas were to declare themselves the independent nation of Gazastan it would equate to abandoning claim to the other parts of Mandatory Palestine (as you call it, by which I think you mean Israel + WB + Gaza). Exactly. That would be good for Israel, as it would provide them with another neighbor Arab country that acknowledges and accepts Israel. So...why is Israel pursuing the one contiguous Pal nation concept rather than encouraging an independent Gazastan?

Because an independent Gazastan is a complete non-starter, for the reason you just said. And Israel has a funny preference for new neighbors who at least say they recognize Israel and aren't going to launch rockets at day care centers, like Hamas did today.

BTW, if declaring yourself a nation state inside certain borders means abandoning claim to land outside those borders, what inference can we draw from the Palestinian Authority's failure to declare a state of Palestine inside the borders of the West Bank and Gaza?
