i would expect in the process before packaging someone could come up with an electronic eye or sensor that would be very close.

i believe they mentioned something like that in news clip about machine not being able to tell good from bad head of lettuce however didn't appear to be a major problem.

i would think a machine that runs down several rows of lettuce and cuts them off , and throws them up to container and later washing got to be cheaper than people running through the fields manually cutting each one by hand.

It has to take fewer back in some warehouse operation to cul out the bad ones as they go to boxing.

All it takes is a willingness for these farmers to change their ways of operation. One machine could be a co operative investment. Pretty much like those who run the big combines to cut wheat etc.
