Seems hard to pass off the timing as a coincidence.

Not that hard, esp. if you only have to pass off one as coincidence. I've heard (don't remember the source, and I certainly can't vouch for its reliability) that the 2nd guy left because he didn't get promoted to the job the first guy used to have. One guy quiting or being pushed out isn't that strange of a coincidence, whatever the timing.

wbmw - coincidence(as in co-incidence) does not equal causality or even correlation.
