I must write a Morning Note of some concern. Yesterday, the Washington Times (a right wing newspaper in Washington DC) carried an article on the potential for a coordinated attack on Iran buy the US and Israel. Normally, I would ignore this right wing rhetoric (as I often ignore that from the left) but the circumstances are becoming more compelling. I think the Bush Administration is emboldened by the fact that the North Koreans may have decided to “come in.” By that I mean give up the nuclear card. Remember that Iran, Iraq and North Korea were labeled the “axis of evil” by President Bush on January 29, 2002. At the time he said, “Iran aggressively pursues these weapons and exports terror, while an unelected few repress the Iranian people's hope for freedom. Iraq continues to flaunt its hostility toward America and to support terror. The Iraqi regime has plotted to develop anthrax, and nerve gas, and nuclear weapons for over a decade. This is a regime that has already used poison gas to murder thousands of its own citizens—leaving the bodies of mothers huddled over their dead children. This is a regime that agreed to international inspections—then kicked out the inspectors. This is a regime that has something to hide from the civilized world. States like these, and their terrorist allies, constitute an axis of evil, arming to threaten the peace of the world. By seeking weapons of mass destruction, these regimes pose a grave and growing danger. They could provide these arms to terrorists, giving them the means to match their hatred. They could attack our allies or attempt to blackmail the United States. In any of these cases, the price of indifference would be catastrophic.” MORNING NOTES 3 OF 5 9/5/2007 On Sept. 3, the Washington Times wrote, “Addressing the annual meeting of France's ambassadors to 188 countries, Mr. Sarkozy said either Iran lives up to its international obligations and relinquishes its nuclear ambitions — or it will be bombed into compliance. Mr. Sarkozy also made it clear he did not agree with the Iranian-bomb-or-bombing-of-Iran position, which reflects the pledge of Mr. Bush to his loyalists, endorsed by Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain of Arizona and Sen. Joe Lieberman, Connecticut Independent. But Mr. Sarkozy recognized unless Iran's theocrats stop enriching uranium to weapons-grade levels under inspection by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), we will all be "faced with an alternative that I call catastrophic."”. Few have noticed, but President Bush has never wavered in 7 years from this goal. Now a French president is convinced that the US Administration means business with respect to nuclear weapon technology. President Sarkozy appears to agree that a catastrophe is in the wings. The North Koreans and Libyans have taken note and agreed to relinquish nuclear weapons. For their part the Iranians are defiant. Persians are not Arabs. Iran fought a brutal 8 year war of sacrifice against Iraq in which over 1 million Iranians (many children) were killed. Sadaam could not defeat Iran. The US even supported the Iraqi’s during the war. The Iranians for their part have not helped defuse the situation. They recently announced they had achieved the working of 3,000 centrifuges in their obsession with nuclear arms. Not one Western diplomat seriously believes the Iranian contention that their reactors will be used for peaceful power generation. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad stated publicly that Iran holds the key to a U.S. withdrawal from Iraq. Mr. Ahmadinejad also says Iran is ready to fill the power vacuum in Iraq following a U.S. withdrawal. "The political power of the occupiers is collapsing rapidly," he said, "and soon we will see a huge power vacuum in the region." There is also the Iranian support for Hezbollah in Lebanon. President Ahmadinejad has publicly vowed the destruction of Israel many times. On this score Israel may not be able to take a chance. The US senses a stalling on the part of the Iranians. Europe is willing to defuse the issue though the IAEA. It is unlikely that President Bush will blink on this situation. It seems less likely that President Ahmadinejad will blink. Two days ago the British army withdrew its forces from the city of Basra. This may have been in response to the potential for armed aggression – or it may be simply be a tactical move by the Brits. Meanwhile a re-armament race is also on in the Gulf. $30 billion in arms will go to the Saudis over the next 10 years, a lesser amount to the Israelis. The consequences of such a war would be catastrophic. In the meantime, energy resources and Discovery companies in the US and Canada should be accumulated. In addition, I suggest once again that precious metals, including gold and silver should play apart of your overall wealth portfolio. Yesterday gold roared ahead. This AM the Yen carry has placed a lid on the yellow metal. Nevertheless gold has yielded annualized returns of 20% per annum since 2001 (US Dollars). Gold has yielded 10% appreciation
