This morning brought positive back-to-school results from many retailers, led by Wal-Mart, whose August sales smashed expectations. Target also reported better-than-expected sales growth, and its shares rose 2.1%.
In other economic news, the Labor Department said jobless claims slid 19000 to 318,000 on a seasonally adjusted basis last week. Wall Street forecasts had called for a decline of 4000. Second-quarter nonfarm business productivity rose at a 2.6% annualized rate in revised data, above expectations of a 2.4% increase. Unit labor costs -- a gauge of inflationary pressures -- rose 1.4% last quarter after a downward revision. And the Institute for Supply Management's August index of service-sector activity was 55.8, matching July's number.
