What's going to be different about that 'vital region' in 10 years?

I would like to believe in 10 years we would see less dictatorships and more democracies in that region... investing our resources in that region is our best investment in our future...

I would say the Middle East is as important today as Western Europe was after the 2nd World War and the rise of Communism. We are STILL in Western Europe, though I doubt we are needed there anymore, I think it has more to do with the European nations insisting on our maintaining a FINANCIAL presence. jdn
