They gave up gaza. Wasnt that the same thing? Or are you splitting hairs over the difference between Judea and Samaria and gaza in the bible.

Sharon gave up Gaza, and I trusted that he was planning to trade the tactical defeat on the ground for diplomatic gains elsewhere, which he seemed to be doing until he was felled by the stroke. Olmert has not been able to follow Sharon's plan.

And just look what has happened since the land was given up. Does Hamas say, ok, we've got Gaza, lets declare Gazastan and do business? Not a bit of it, they say, we drove the Jews out of Gaza and we'll drive them out of Jerusalem! Allahu Akhbar!

Actually, in terms of emotional attachment and Israeli politics Gaza couldn't be more different from the West Bank. Gaza was the home of the Philistines; Judea and Samaria were the ancient heartland of Judea. If the Jews have the slightest claim on their ancient homeland then they have it for Judea and Samaria.

They may give it up for pragmatic reasons, but why on earth should they give it up because "it's Arab land and they have no right to set foot there" as the Arabs say? The Palestinians routinely say that the Temple never existed, the ancient province of Judea didn't exist, the events in Bible happened somewhere else. Should the Israelis agree to this too?
