Poppies are a big conundrum for Afghanistan. It's the best cash crop they have. They could try legalizing it for the morphine market, like Turkey, but the amount of opium that would be put on the market would crash the price. Farmers would start selling to the drug dealers again, rinse repeat. Don't ask me what to do about it...

For a less optimistic man, the fact that such a tiny percentage of the earth's surface is needed to supply the world with heroin and cocaine would be cause to doubt the effectiveness of eradication.

I have to marvel at how subdued the writer is.....<g>
