It was a lot better when the Iraqi's and Iranians were just killing each other and we could just help either side as it suited our purposes.

Actually, we helped both sides at the same time. Oh yeah, that policy really worked out well, lol.

It would have been far far better to have tried either direcfly or indirectly to end that stupid war as quickly as possible with diplomacy, but we were too obsessed with the supposed danger of Iran to participate in any such venture. The world would be a different place today if we made it clear to Saddam back then that he couldn't just go around invading his neighbors with (relative) impunity, internationally. Instead, we applauded and helped him. Way to go, Mr. Reagan et al.
