The Irgun was deemed a terrorist organization by the British for blowing up British installations and soldiers. Since then, terrorism has been redefined to mean mass murder of civilians. However, the point you miss that that from 1948 on, Begin and the Irgun became Israeli soldiers and politicians, operating under Israeli law. Ben Gurion brought the militias to heel. He knew he had to if Israel were to becoming a functioning state. That's the important point. Nothing like it has ever happened on the Palestinian side.
