The database performance (where AMD's IPC leads Intel's by about 15%) is probably the best indication.

And AMD generally scales better than Intel, too.

But they need more than 2ghz. Given scaling factors, 2.5ghz should be the equivalent of a 3+ghz Intel part.

But they need to ship that.

The thing is, a (old dual core) 3.2ghz Opteron would probably be better than either Barcelona or Woodcrest, given Oracle's pricing model.

I'm starting to that Henri wanted to wait for 2.5ghz, Hector wanted to ship whatever was available, and that's where paths parted.
