Why would Intel be sweating those bogus scores?

Dan,

Given the scaling we've seen in the past, they'll need close to a 5ghz Penryn to match a 3ghz Barcelona.

AMD would have been in a decent shape if 2.6 GHz shipped in mid-07 (with Tier-1 boxes arriving about now). But the slip schedule and major slip in clock speed leaves AMD in a difficult situation.

Now at least I can understand why the Intel fan squad has been so shrill this morning. Those benchmarks are pretty scary for Intel's server business.

Assuming that AMD can ramp up the clock speeds rapidly. The problem is that the gains need to be extraordinary, given AMD is now at 2 GHz.

Joe

PS: I found this mobo:
tyan.com
which seems like a decent low end mobo for Barcelona. Single socket 1207, 8 DIMMS (16 GB with 2 GB DIMMs) - registered, better latency due to no memory coherench check, fairly cheap...
