Hindsight is always 20/20 but if we had said to the Iraqi army...you are all still working for us, the new boss, here is a 50% pay increase payable in a month...Here's a little bunus to tide you over until the end of the month. Oh, and to get the bonus, please collect your weapons and line up out there on the parade field so we can document who you are and your assigned armament. Certainly things could not have gone worse under this sceanario than what was actually done..... All our options would have been open, and we could have figured out who was who and who had what...

"Saddam's iraqi army was geared more for regime retention than national defense...." Little doubt about that! (The fact that his family's clan was a small minority among the minority that the Sunnis themselves are in 'Iraq' no doubt played a role in that, too.) "Disbanding of the army was not a great flaw in the war plans....Just my humble opinion..." I agree. Not a flaw in the 'war plans' AT ALL. (The 'war' went even better then planned. Was a complete successes from most any vantage point.) Believe, rather, was a BIG flaw in the OCCUPATION 'plans'. (And, I put that last 'plans' in quotes because it wasn't much of a "plan". The admin. --- and their small clique of mostly civilian 'neo-con' thinkers --- TOSSED OUT the EXTREMELY DETAILED PLAN for the occupation that had been rigorously prepared by our best military planners from the Pentagon, Middle Eastern experts from State and C.I.A., etc., just a month or two prior to the invasion.) The decision to toss the Army out on the streets with no take-home pay (thus starting the clock on the insurgency) was the 'neo-cons' bright idea --- it WAS NOT in the original and much more detailed and thought out US Government plan for the occupation... which details took some three years or so to be drawn up.
