I just did Federal taxes. A 12% sales tax is not unheard of in the developed world. The average Value Added Tax in Europe is around 18%. And, their gasoline taxes are around twice Japan's, and their marginal tax rates higher too.

Again, I am not advocating all these taxes. I am just pointing out how lightly taxed the US is relatively to other developed countries. We can solve our budget deficit and fund boomer retirement relatively easily, and still remain the most lightly taxed developed country.
