I don't think Cray cares one way or another. They'll get paid for checking some boxes on forms. Cray is just a charity of the military industrial complex.

Looks like Oak Ridge National Labs is waiting for an "impending" Barcelona delivery of about 5,750 chips.

"We are already running machines with 23,000 processor cores, and we have high expectations about our impending quad-core delivery." biz.yahoo.com

Are they waiting for 2.5GHz chips?

The previous paragraph talks about "more than 120,000 processor cores and over one petaflops of peak performance."
120,000 x 4 flops/cycle x 2.5GHz = 1.2 petaflops.

2GHz would not quite reach 10^12, while 2.5 GHz would achieve 1 PFlop even on the Linpack benchmark used by top500.org for ranking supercomputers. A PFlop would certainly trump Blue Gene/L at 0.281 PF.

The fastest x86 machine on earth (#2 behind IBM's Blue Gene/L) was Oak Ridge's Jaguar. It used 11,508 DC Opterons to achieve 0.102 pflops on Linpack.

If either Jaguar or Red Storm were equipped with Barc 2.5's they would probably take #1 since I doubt IBM is going to upgrade Blue Gene; rather, starting from scratch with Power6. Since the deadline for submissions is 10/15/07 and the improvement in Linpack scores is better than 3:1, I suspect that a bunch of Barc's will find a home in supercomputer sockets before then.

The deadline for the submission of new sites for the 30th TOP500 List is October 15th, 2007. All system reported have to be installed by November 1st, 2007. top500.org
