They sound like elements of a campaign with one overriding purpose: to convince politicians and opinion makers that we're making progress in Iraq regardless of whether we are or not.

As con jobs go, this is a masterful one.

I note even he isn't claiming there is no progress. Anbar has flipped and is now fighting Al Qaeda. Diyala is flipping too. This is too big to make up or completely ignore. So the Democrats have to smear Petraeus, a straight-shooter by all accounts, and by implication his entire chain of command.

Because it's sooooo important to them to lose now instead of waiting and seeing if the current progress will continue or not.

Why are they so impatient for American defeat, I wonder? Why so insistent that they they have to make out that all the generals in the military are liars?

I have a news flash for them: the American people trust generals more than party hacks. The chumps at Moveon.org just accused General Petraeus of being a traitor for the sole reason that he's interfering with their campaign to cut and run right now.

They will find they have sparked a reaction they don't like.
