>>After reading it, I wondered why the U.S. isn't inundated with "guests" from Europe...<<

Maybe they've decided that the charm of viewing fields full of McMansions, strip malls, Nascar races and fast food outlets while risking a mugging in a nation that can only be viewed while speeding down the highway in a rental car isn't quite what it used to be?

The streets and hotels of NYC are packed with foreign travelers, especially euro's. There seem to be far more than usual at this time of year and it was very heavy through the summer. A modest price hotel near me became a Day's Hotel a few years ago and they have clearly made a connection to that channel. The neighborhood is packed with groups having animated discussions in many languages at the top of the subway stairs or in the cafe's. They don't mind paying up for Starbucks either. Lots of German or British families with several children in tow. That was not common at all previously.

Tourism from Europe to the US has fallen even as the dollar has gone down. Assumption is due to the US presenting a "friendly face" to the world in recent years. Big destinations are New York and Florida in particular.
