With Mexican crude production declining rapidly the ability of the Mexican government to continue welfare spending will diminish.

Let's see, if the Mexican economy falters where will the residents go for help? Where would they be without the massive level of remittances now sent from the U.S.??

I may have mentioned here I was doing some writing on this issue, and it's my firm, and very sad, belief, that Mexico is headed for disaster, relying so heavily on Pemex for much of its (the Mexican state) financing. The slowdown and apparently very near almost collapse of Pemex's main field of Cantarell are beyond a disaster. (The head of Pemex exploration and production Luis Ramirez Corzo said in 2004 they're losing 14% per year). What the U.S. will face with such a meltdown, I don't wish to even speculate on.
