Nonetheless, I too subscribe to the view that Bush is his best recruiter, and it is in his interest to keep this war going as long as he can. Don't you think an Al Qaeda victory against the US superpower would be a damn good recruiter for OBL? Why else is he pleading so hard for the Democrats in Congress to hop to it and end the war? Go read the transcript. Sure didn't sound to me like OBL wanted that war to continue. He keeps harping on and on about how everybody wants the US to leave, how the Democrats promised to make the US leave. He sounds just like the netroots. If keeping the war going is in OBL's interest, why isn't he saying, bring it on, we will crush you, we will triumph, if you run away we'll follow you and bomb Manhattan again, all the Republican slogans? Now that would have helped Bush extend the war. Here's a very very simple explanation: the war in Iraq isn't going so well - at all - for AQI and AQ is getting desperate for the Americans to hurry up and lose by running away. Otherwise AQ might be left with a situation very hard to package as a triumph for the global jihad.
