Re: "I didn't mean to imply that "divide and conquer" within the varied religious, cultural, ethnic and geographic strata of the Middle East (or the world, for that matter) should be the only strategy....just that it was a strategy that has worked TIME and TIME AGAIN over history."

Right.

I understood that. Don't think there was any confusion.

Re: "We don't need to export Jeffersonian democracy to peoples who don't want it, can't understand it and don't trust it."

Right. (Though I think that the appeal of Democracy is pretty wide-spread and enduring. It sort of 'sells itself'. People always want freedom and self-rule. :-)

Not that there is any thing wrong with a light helping hand every now and again (for example: it almost *never* helps to 'advance Democracy' when we make the 'short-term' tactical choice to support un-Democratic systems or Dictators around the globe).

So, often, among the *best* 'help' we can give to the cause of Democracy... is in choosing NOT to do certain self-destructive things: such as supporting Totalitarian rulers.

Re: "... What we can do is build off their own specific foundations...find the cracks we can exploit with their "neighbors" and promote our national interests in the bargain."

EXACTLY true!

People 'are people' everywhere (with mostly the same needs/desires and motivating influences)... but there *are* exploitable local differences.

And, it's always better (more EFFECTIVE, less prone to failure) to act with vision, and an awareness of the realities on the ground... then to act blindly or in ignorance.
