Yes, I really don't get it. All they have to do is say something like "even though it's well-known I don't support current US policies, I am of course horrified that a mass-murderer should cite my name in support of the cause of terrorism. I of course disavow this and support the cause of civilized people everywhere". That way they don't have to stand down on their particular political views, but they also make their position wrt terrorism clear. Both left and right would respect and be satisfied with that, I think. Their silence reflects badly on them. You'd think they'd be smart enough to figure that out.
