Apparently it hasn't stopped Europeans from coming here, if you visit NYC you will see them there in droves....shopping. Tourism as an export category is way up in the last few years.

It used to be Americans would go to Europe and be shocked by the difference in security operations or be curiously wondering about the signs in the underground telling you what to do if you saw an unattended package. I can remember being totally surprised by the guys with submachine guns as I walked through the airport in Greece 30 years. We had to walk out and claim our luggage lined up next to the plane before they would load it on the plane and let you board. I can remember arguing to no avail in Switzerland with security because they wanted our film to go through their x-ray machine and absolutely refused to do any hand checks.

This was at a time when we had major airports where you could still park right next to the tarmac and walk straight to your plane without ever checking in or showing ID.
