That's funny, sort of. You can give 'em sophisticated security equipment but keeping it working is another thing altogether.

I remember reading here that Iraq got all kinds of new million dollar medical equipment but none of the doctors were trained how to use it so people died while the machines collected dust - is that how supply side economics is supposed to work?

One of my oddest gun stories that happened in a foreign country took place in Cozumel, Mexico. We rented a jeep to drive to the ocean side which is pretty desolate but beautiful. Only one road along the beach and in the middle of the road, blocking it completely, are three guys in military gear, they each had Uzis but one guy was carrying a fair sized barracuda (the fish) and a very large bong. They asked us for a ride, as if we would say no in that situation. It felt more than a little estrange driving around with these guys in our back seat.

BWAHAH - this is what I come to SI for - the travel tips - I ran into lots of those UZI guys myself and I decided I don't like travelling in mexico after dat. The next time I went with some airforce friends and wouldn't have minded running into some uzi toting guys with that crew - but they are always so busy and rarely get to travel with me. I have had more guns pulled on me in the USA than any other country I have lived or travelled - but for some reason I always felt pretty sure the trigger wasn't to be pulled unlike the feeling I get in other places.
