In other words, the "success" in Anbar had nothing to do with the "surge" or whatever else Bush has done there!!

Were the Americans fighting in Anbar 10 months ago? Yes. Were they trying to negotiate with the Sunnis 10 months ago? Yes. Leo says they were! Were they in position to take advantage of Al Qaeda's mistakes? Yes. Did the surge help by implementing a better counter-insurgency strategy and sending more men? All agree that it did.

Silly conclusion. I think you are the one who needs to be a little more nuanced.

The joke is that we are being told by bush that we are fighting in iraq to defeat al quaeda there. Now in an interesting debate on the thread today, it turns out that all of us believe in various degrees that al quaeda in iraq is really irrelevent to the real issues there. And thats most probably the ultimate division of the country into autonomous zones--at least three perhaps more. Who rules what? When do the india/pakistan israel/palestine population transfers end. How much of a civil war? How to share the oil wealth with the the non-shiaa, non-kurd sunni and/or mixed states that arise. And then of course who influences who? How long US is active? If and when persians and arabs go at it. Which shiaa militia and militia leader will triumph? Will iran be the next party to be in the quag? Are shiaa arabs more arab or more shiaa and how does that cut across different militias. Hell, if einstein were president he couldnt figure all this out so even in the post bush world and even if prez is a dem, its going to be "hard work" for sure.
