The Broadcom patent, which expires in 2010, covers a way to save battery life when a phone is outside its usual network. The trade complaint is part of a broader feud that started in 2004 when Broadcom, known for chips used in television set-top boxes, said it would enter the bigger cell phone market.

The ITC case is known as In the Matter of Certain Baseband Processor Chips and Chipsets, 337-543, U.S. International Trade Commission. (Bloomberg)
