My daughter started 6th grade (~1980) in the Palm Beach FL public schools.
She came home early one day with a teacher note-

"Diane has hurted her rist".

The next year she was at the Rosarian Academy in WPB.

Apparently no one corrects them along the way, which is why they end up in college in that shape. Somebody told these teachers that language is a lot like a Escher painting, I guess. Is it any wonder people fall back on how it 'feels' when evaluating information. If you can't put three sentences together, how do you process anything. Where would you start?
