Quite right ElM <But before it was: Oh my God! we need some high tech appendage to our economies not to be seen as a rural economy. > and it was about 35 years ago, when the NZ government was ranting on about needing to industrialize and get more immigrants in to work the factories, that I was raving that all NZ needed was the farmers and enough mechanics to service their Jaguars [brand of car - hot stuff at the time].

NZ wasted umpty $billions on a stupid immigration binge to fuel industrialisation. Both stupid ideas. Now we have traffic jams and an economy heading for pre-industrial over-populated like Bangladesh.

Fortunately, there is another aspect to the economy - people who invest in things like QUALCOMM and bring in money to go shopping. It's a good line of work. Better than chasing possums to turn into fur or working on a steel mill or simple manufacturing process.
