By August 2007, the Dem Prez candidates were taking a different approach:

It would therefore appear that those seriously auditioning for the CIC slot, which leaves out people like Edwards<g>,
are a little more realistic about Iraq than their brethren in Congress.

Ken, you have to realize that it's all politics all the time.

The Dems want the war over on their terms and in a way where Bush takes 200 per cent of all heat. That's why they won't simply cut the funding, which would not cause starvation, but which would cause hardship and force withdrawal. If things went bad, they'd have to take the hit.

They also don't want to do anything that could possibly result in a favorable outcome. Otherwise they might have at least asked Petraeus what the troops needed or what they as a body could do to help.
