My father, who passed in 1976, used to say that and I didn't understand it until years later... and I still don't agree with it although I do agree that "tough" times are needed.

The actual Great Depression turned this country towards socialism, and under other scenarios it could have turned out much much worse. The basic problem is:
A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves money from the public treasure.
