Oil. It's a resource war. If things break bad, and they very well could, our economy is hugely vulnerable to an oil shortage (25% of the world's consumption). And if our economy breaks bad then the twin deficits will kick in and strangle us. Globalization is a two edged sword... it we can't buy all the stuff that's made overseas (that used to be made here) then we're in deep shit.

Yes, Iraq (and certainly a war on Iran) could destroy this country.

"....start with the significant ethnic differences in Iraq and the fight over oil."

That doesn't even come close to explaining how a presence in Iraq would destroy this country.

What do you think broke the Soviet Union's economic back and brought its downfall? It was the long running war in Afghanistan along with its maintenance requirements in Eastern Europe. And that war was not nearly as costly as the one in Iraq......and we are fighting two wars. If you think we have unlimited economic resources than you are myopic. As it is, they are keeping things running in this country with smoke and mirrors. As a private citizen, you would not run your finances the way this country is running its finances. The collapse of the bridge in MPLS was a wake up call. There will be more because we don't have the money to replace them. Meanwhile, we are fast approaching a trillion dollars spent in Iraq alone.
