Laz, I followed this story on the morning Bay Area news. It wasn't so much Peet's trying to stop Starbuck's from moving in on the Richmond District in San Francisco, but rather the local coffee shop and restaurant merchants.

Also, street interviews were conducted, and the fine folk of the Richmond District did not want to see Starbuck's move in or to otherwise see their neighborhood overrun by cookie-cutter franchise businesses.

Of course, there is no doubt in my mind that Peet's is high-fiving the decision to keep Starbuck's out.

I have not yet checked to see if there is a Peet's in the Richmond District. - Holly

I did a lookup on Peet's within 100 miles of San Francisco and it found 102 stores.

Peet's apparently just gets its San Francisco stores because the local government favors them over Starbucks, so they get favorable treatment at the hearings.
