Instead of facing it. He delayed. Now the problems are still there to be dealt with. There is no way a return to natural size can be stopped. He shift the problems to be dealt by the young people since the old will still benefit from the status quo. A white dwarf is very hot when it is formed, but since it has no source of energy, it will gradually radiate away its energy and cool down. You can't restart the red giant once it goes the path of White dwarf. Once a empire starts returning to its natural size it can't be stopped.
