Well, they could have had a wing of B-52's fly over and unload. :-)

wasn't there, but I can think of a number of less violent means of removing a public nuisance, such as arresting the people when they come out for whatever reason, shutting off the electricity and water, or even using tear gas if the nuisance was of sufficient disruption to the community.

You seem very quick to blame the police for unforseeable consequences.

As far as I know, the US is the ONLY country with a posse comitatus law, ragged as it is now. In other countries, the military and their weapons can be used fully legally to enforce civil law.
