"Bush is no conservative. Never has been."

I would argue its Conservatism that has changed and that Bush simply reflects that.

Seems to me most Conservatives are more lathered up about Gays possibly being able to marry than they are about whether the books are balanced or not.

Conservatives are much more concerned about abortion than they are that Bush increased discretionary spending by enormous multiples.

1/3 of the country is still hard core behinds the mess in Iraq - thats the face of Conservatism now. It used to be Conservatives thought it best the US mind its own business. Now Conservatives think we should "nation build" in the crappyest place on earth because to think anything else is "un-American".

Conservatism as you probably conceive of it - eg. fiscally responsible - are just a splinter/fringe element of the over all Conservative movement nowadays.

Ron Paul embodies a lot of old-time Conservative values - he really is the best Republican candidate IMO - but he's being attacked as a "nut" by the new Conservative advocates O'Rielly and Malkin.

If you want to know where Conservatism is now - read Malkin. Shes more concerned trying to prove the Japanese interment in WW II was a valid concept than she cares that the country is going to hell in hand basket financially.
