i use a 37" 1080p monitor at 2 feet and it's fine for my eyes at 1920x1200. the macbook pro can drive the 37" very easily. there are some 40" sony or samsung that have beautiful blacks that may work at 2.5 feet for you for near $1500 to $2000. with an air-mouse, say from logitech, that may work great for you also. the dell 30" maybe cheaper if you time it right with coupons off places like couponmountain.com and others. aside from the fact that the apple displays looks cleaner, the lcd itself may well be from the same OEM in China.
