You are certainly right about the overall numbers. What am i remmembering was a particularly unprotected small amount of americans place forward nearer to the border. I may be remembering wrong.

Those "few thousand troops" were almost twice what we have in Iraq, and they were considered inadequate to stop the barbarian hordes at the Fulda Gap, hence we were aiming nukes at that area, too.



As I recall, the Warsaw Pact outnumbered the NATO forces by about 5 to 1 so a NATO nuclear first strike was always in the picture.
